To most people gambling is a harmless pastime and for some it is a chance like the lottery to strike it rich but behind all the glamor there is a dark side to gambling that has serious economic and social consequences for the sufferers. People should bare in mind that to gamble one needs money and some times money that one can not necessarily spare change but money to pay the bills.
Gambling always starts off as a past time where by one is spending little amounts that is change or money they do not mind losing. After winning a few times most people are over come by the urge to spend more as the saying goes “high risk high returns” and thus people start spending money that they would not spend all in the hope of getting a high return . This is where the problem starts for most people.
Gambling danger warning signs are seen when gambler loses money and uses more money to try and win back the money he lost in the first place. Gambling becomes a addictive drug that needs a constant fix so that the gambler can feel good about themselves and like any other addiction family life is affected as gambler starts to lie about his whereabouts and starts stealing from friends and family, money to feed his or her habit. Many people have lost their property they have been working for all their life and sadly families have been torn apart by this as parents divorce because of financial issues that would have been brought about by this problem.
Gambling can also lead to other social past times that also become problems in the long running for example smoking and drinking so as to try and forget the problems that have been created by gambling and this usually creates health problems for the gambler. The children of gamblers are also affected as they may struggle at school and some even run away from home. The family may be harassed by people coming to claim their debts.
A gamblers addiction can become a problem in the work place as he or she might start going late to work, failing to finish assignments on time and not pitching up for work at all and all this may lead to causing bad blood among employees and worse off getting laid off at work. Thus to all people I say gamble responsibly.
